Chuck VanCamp
A lifelong resident of Quincy, Illinois, Chuck VanCamp has spent his life building, repairing, and creating with his hands. A proud Navy veteran, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and retired machinist with 38 years of experience, Chuck has always found satisfaction in craftsmanship and problem-solving. Together, he and his wife, Mavis, have built a beautiful life centered around family, raising three children and welcoming four grandchildren.
Chuck's journey into woodworking began just a few years ago while admiring the work of other wood artists. One simple thought—"I wonder if I could do that?"—sparked a creative passion that quickly grew into something much bigger. Those who know Chuck know that curiosity is often the beginning of his next adventure.
As he began exploring wood carving, Chuck found himself drawn to the natural beauty of fallen wood and bark. Looking closely at pieces gathered from the forest floor, he often saw faces and personalities hidden within them. This discovery led him to create hand-carved House Spirits, inspired by ancient European folklore in which carved spirits served as symbols of protection and good fortune. Through each piece, Chuck seeks to reveal the unique character already present within the wood.
Today, Chuck creates a wide variety of handcrafted woodworking pieces, including carved walking sticks, birdhouses, planter boxes, figurines, lantern ornaments, House Spirits, and other unique wood carvings. His work celebrates the beauty of natural materials while bringing warmth, character, and craftsmanship into homes and gardens.
For Chuck, woodworking is both creative and deeply therapeutic. He describes carving as calming, rewarding, and fulfilling. Nothing brings him greater joy than knowing his work has touched someone's life, whether through a meaningful gift, a cherished keepsake, or a handcrafted piece that brings comfort and happiness to others.
